The virtuoso crystal copy, which is the first of its kind, of the Hungarian Holy Crown was produced by the Ajka Crystal factory around 1896.
The craftsmanship is highly intricate, employing both cutting and cut-glass inlays to simulate the pearls and precious stone embellishments of the corona graeca. The delicate etched depictions accurately reproduce the original cloisonné enamel pictures, featuring figures such as the Pantocrator (Christ), the Archangels, various saints, the Byzantine Emperors, and King Géza I of Hungary.
The overall high technical standard and the variety of labor-intensive operations involved strongly suggest this colorless, transparent crystal piece was created for exhibition. Its exactness indicates the artisans likely had access to precise drawings or engravings, potentially utilizing findings from the official scientific examination of the Holy Crown conducted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
